Some of the most common questions we hear about how long a flag will last:
- What flag will last over a year in high winds without fraying?
- What flag won’t fade in the intense sun?
The honest answer is simple: There isn’t one.
No matter how well a flag is made, it is still a fabric product that is exposed to some of the harshest outdoor conditions imaginable. Wind constantly pulls and whips at the material, UV rays from the sun gradually break down fibers and colors, and rain, snow, dirt, and pollution all contribute to wear over time.
High Quality American Flags
At Custom Flag Company, we proudly manufacture high-quality American-made flags using premium materials and expert craftsmanship. Our nylon and polyester flags are designed to provide excellent performance and durability. However, even the best-made flag has a lifespan, and that lifespan depends largely on the environment where it flies.
Location Matters
For example, a flag flown in a protected area with moderate weather may last significantly longer than the same flag displayed on a tall flagpole in an open, windy location. Here in Colorado, our combination of intense sunshine, frequent high winds, and rapidly changing weather is especially hard on flags. The higher the flagpole and the more exposure it receives, the faster natural wear will occur.
While no flag is fade-proof or tear-proof, there are ways to maximize its life:
- Choose the right material for your environment.
- Take the flag down during severe windstorms whenever possible.
- Rotate between two or more flags to reduce constant exposure.
- Inspect the flag regularly and replace it before excessive damage occurs.
A faded or tattered flag doesn’t reflect the pride it represents. Many of our commercial customers plan on replacing their flags annually. Or even more frequently in demanding locations to keep their property looking its best.
If someone promises you a flag that will fly year after year in extreme conditions without fading or wearing out, they’re making a promise that simply can’t be kept.
Instead, choose a quality American-made flag, care for it properly, and replace it when needed. That’s the best way to ensure your flag always looks as proud as the message it represents.
