When you have a flagpole, there is maintenance that needs to be done. Some maintenance is more involved than others. Each can be difficult, which is why we are here to help. We provide service to get to the top of your flagpole and repair or replace anything broken up there. And, we also provide a service to change out your flag. That way, you never have to think about it. However, it is pretty simple. So, if you are unsure, we are here to explain how to change out your flag.

How to change out your flag

Buy a New Flag

The first step seems pretty self-explanatory, but first things first, get yourself a new flag. If you are unsure what size you are currently flying, you can bring down your old flag and measure the height of the flag. For example, if your flag is 3’ tall, you need a 3’x5’ or if your flag is 6’ tall, you need a 6’x10’. If you need any additional help determining this, we are here to help.

Take Down Your Old Flag

Now it’s time to bring down your old flag. If you have an external halyard flagpole, you will start untying the rope from the cleat. Once untied, respectfully lower your flag until you can unhook it from the snaphooks. Make sure to tie the rope off when it is down so the rope does not come off the pulley at the top.

If you have an internal halyard flagpole, either grab your key to open the door to the cam action cleat, or grab your winch handle to start lowering your flag. With the cam action cleat, release the rope by lifting the cam cleat up, and move the rope to the side. Once released, respectfully lower your flag until you can unhook it from the snaphooks. Just a safe measure, clamp your rope down so you do not lose the rope. With the winch handle, insert it into the allocated slot and begin turning the handle to lower the flag. Once lowered, unhook the flag from the flag arranger.

Check Your Parts

While the flag is off, now is a good time to evaluate other parts on your flagpole. Check the rope for any fraying, and check the snaphooks or flag arranger for any wear. If these are starting to look worn out, you can easily replace them, or you can give us a call to do it for you.

Attach your New Flag

Now that we have the old flag off and evaluated the parts, go ahead and attach your new flag to the snaphooks or flag arranger.

Raise the Flag

Now, either grab the rope or the winch handle and start pulling the rope up or cranking the cable up to the top. The rhythm that you pull the rope or crank the winch should be slow and ceremonial.  With the winch, make sure not to over-crank because this can cause the cable to fray or cause issues with the winch inside the flagpole. Once the flag is at the top, tie off your rope on your external halyard flagpole, clamp the rope on your cam-action cleat flagpole, or stop cranking the winch handle.
