History of Missouri State Flag:
- Adopted March 22, 1913
- In 1861 the first flag of Missouri was created, it was the arms of Missouri in gold on a blue flag
- The current flag has 3 horizontal stripes red at the top, white in the middle, and blue at the bottom with the arms of Missouri in the middle
- The red represents valor and purity
- The blue represents permanency, vigilance, and justice of the state
- The 3 colors also represent the French influence on the state in the early years
- The 24 white stars around the seal represent Missouri as the 24th US state
- Marie Elizabeth Oliver was appointed the project to design the state flag, she started the project in 1908 with the Daughters of the American Revolution
- She did a lot of research and had Mark Kochitzky paint a paper flag
- The flag failed to pass in the House
- When the Missouri state capitol burned down in 1911, her design burned with it
- She then created a silk version of the flag which was then adopted on March 22, 1913
