Minnesota State Flag

Minnesota State Flag

The state of Minnesota Flag is digitally printed on 200 denier SolarMax® nylon. The fabric is made for outdoor use with four rows of stitching on the fly end. The material of the flag starts as white, the blue background and crest is printed using DuPont ink. The flag is treated to resist sun and chemical deterioration. The state of Minnesota flag is printed single side reverse, which means it reads correctly on the front and reads in reverse on the back, our minds can easily read in reverse, so I’m sure you have never noticed the text was backwards. Our flags are have canvas header material and brass grommets on 12″x18″ through 6’x10′. 8’x12′ and larger are finished with D Rings and either canvas webbing or rope and thimble. 4’x6′ and smaller are available with pole hem and/or fringe.

History of Minnesota State Flag:

  • Adopted August 2, 1983
  • The flag has a modified version of the states seal on a blue background
  • In 1983 the Women’s Auxiliary Board took control, created a 6 person committee to design the state flag
    • A contest was held to design the flag
    • There were 200 submissions
    • Amelia Hyde Center won – in return she received $15
    • The design was the state seal surrounded by moccasin flowers
    • A red ribbon was intertwined through the design
      • “L’Etoile du Norde” which means “The Star of the North”
      • The dates 1819 – the establishment of Fort Snelling which was used for defense during war
      • 1893 – the adoption of the flag
    • At the top, above the flowers and ribbon is the dat 1858 which is when Minnesota became a state
    • Below the seal and design is “Minnesota” then there are 19 stars clustered to form the shape of a larger star that represents Minnesota as the 19th state to be to be admitted after the original 13 colonies – so the 32nd state overall
    • This flag was originally made out of silk by Pauline and Thomane Fjelde, who won a gold medal for the creation
  • In 1957 the flag was redesigned to eliminate the white side of the flag to cut on cost of production and to make it more durable in the wind
  • In 1983, there was a change in the seal, so the design of the flag did also. And the color changed from a royal blue to a medium blue
