Illinois State Flag

Illinois State Flag

The state of Illinois Flag is digitally printed on 200 denier SolarMax® nylon. The fabric is made for outdoor use with four rows of stitching on the fly end. The material of the flag starts as white, the seal is printed using DuPont ink. The flag is treated to resist sun and chemical deterioration. The state of Illinois flag is printed single side reverse, which means it reads correctly on the front and reads in reverse on the back, our minds can easily read in reverse, so I’m sure you have never noticed the state seal & “Illinois” was backwards. Our flags are have canvas header material and brass grommets on 12″x18″ through 6’x10′. 8’x12′ and larger are finished with D Rings and either canvas webbing or rope and thimble. 4’x6′ and smaller are available with pole hem and/or fringe.

History of Illinois State Flag:

  • Adopted on June 27,1969
  • White flag with the seal of Illinois on it – below the seal says “Illinois”
  • The seal of Illinois was originally designed in 1819
  • Then redesigned in 1868
    • In 1967, before the redesigned by Sharon Tyndale, he suggested the banner read “National Union, State Sovereignty” instead of “State Sovereignty, National Union”
      • This was declined
      • When he designed the flag he kept the order they wanted, however, he made the banner twist and “Sovereignty” is upside down – making it harder to read
  • In 1914, Ella Park Lawrence, who was previously part of the Daughters of the American Revolution sent a letter to every Illinois chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution announcing a contest to design a flag with a $25 prize
  • They received 35 designs – and on July 6, 1915 it became the official state banner
  • In 1969 there was a petition to add “Illinois” to the flag because people at the Vietnam War did not recognize the flag
