Air Force

The Air Force Flag has recently undergone an update. What has not changed is the blue background and the 13 stars that represent the 13 original British American colonies. A crest in the center consists of a cloud formation behind a bald eagle that perches on a blue shield which is the same. The inscription under the shield has been removed and a bold circle with the words “United States Air Force” has been added. Fly your Air Force flag on Air Force Day, August 1 and Air Force Birthday, September 18.

Army

The Army Flag is recognizable with a white background, a blue War Office Seal, and beneath the red scroll with the words “United States Army” and “1775” in blue under the scroll. Fly your Army Flag on Army Day, April 6 and Army Birthday, June 14.

Although the POW-MIA is not a military branch, it is widely used and recognized as a military flag. This is a black flag with a white prisoner of war (POW) before a guard tower and barbed wire. The letters POW*MIA are above the silhouette and the words “You Are Not Forgotten” appear below in white. MIA stands for Missing in Action. POW-MIA day is the third Friday in September.

Merchant Marine

Also, worth mentioning is the Merchant Marine flag. Whose birthday is March 15 and National Maritime Day is May 22.

There is no official authorization for service flags to be flown by civilians, veterans, families of active duty personnel. Others fly them to show their pride in our military and the service branches they symbolize.
