What Materials are the American Flag Available in?

There are a few materials the American flag can be made out of. Figuring out which material is best for you can be overwhelming. The three materials we make the American flag out of is 200 Denier Nylon, 2-Ply Polyester, and Cotton. All of our American flags are made with sewn stripes and embroidered stars.

200 Denier Nylon

Nylon is most commonly used on flagpoles on the side of a house, on large flagpoles that fly 15’x25’ flags or larger, or because of personal preference. Nylon is a lighter material, dries faster when it gets wet, is less expensive, and does not fade as fast as polyester but does tend to fray quicker. The reason we fly nylon flags on large flagpoles is because of the weight of the flag. Once those heavier flags get put on flagpoles, and either don’t fly or are too heavy on the flagpole.

2-Ply Polyester

Polyester is most commonly used on flagpoles that have flags that are 4’x6’ to 12’x18’. Polyester has the look and feel of cotton, it is great for areas with high wind, and does not fray as fast as a nylon flag, but does tend to fade faster than nylon. Because of the durability and cotton look and feel, this is the most popular flag material we have.

Xtra Stitch

We first added the Xtra Stitch American flag to our website in 2018, and it has quickly become one of our best selling items.. So, what is an Xtra Stitch American flag? It is a 2-ply polyester flag, like the one described before, but it has reinforced stitching along the fly end and the corners. The fly end has four rows of zig-zag stitching and extra reinforcement on the corners. Once the flag starts to fray, it will catch the next row of stitching and slow down the fraying. This flag is not meant to last forever, no flag is. It just helps prolong the life of the flag.

The final material, and anymore, the least common material flags are made out of is cotton. While there are still some flags made out of cotton, they are mostly used as memorial flags. The most common size is 5’x9.5’ for a casket. During Covid, this was the only size manufacturers were making. They just started making more sizes recently. However, we don’t recommend flying cotton flags outside. They fade quickly when exposed to the sun. When they get wet, they are heavy and take a long time to dry. They are a little more expensive than polyester, but if it is your preference, we can get it for you.
