What Size Flag Should I Fly on my Flagpole?

When talking with a customer about what size flag to get, most people know what size they need or want. However, there are a handful of people who have no idea, and that is okay! We are here to help answer your question, what size flag should I fly on my flagpole?

Have you ordered flags before?

This is the easiest way to figure out what size flag you need. If you have previously ordered flags and those are the correct size, it should be stated on the invoice. If you have never ordered flags before or for the life of you, cannot find the previous invoice, we have other ways to find the best size.

Do you have current flags flying?

Another easy way to find the size of your flags is if you currently have flags flying on your flagpole. You can bring them down and measure the hoist end. This end does not fray or lose any length. And because flags have standardized sizes, we can easily figure out what size it is. For example, if the hoist is 36” or 3’, we know the flag is 3’x5’.

Do you know the size of your flagpole?

If you know the size of your flagpole, here is a helpful chart on what size flag to fly on the flagpole.

What Size Flag Should I Fly on my Flagpole?

How do I figure out what size my flagpole is?

There are a few ways to figure out the height of your flagpole.

  1. If the flagpole has rope on it, attach the end of a tape measure to the top snap hook and hoist it on up, this will be the most accurate way to determine the height.
  2. If there is a building by the flagpole something on the flagpole can help determine the height. For example, if there is a door, those are typically 10’. You can eyeball about how many doors high it is.
  3. Have someone stand next to the flagpole and take a picture, make sure you are far enough away to get the entire pole in the picture. For example, Sam is standing next to the flagpole, now I will figure out how many Sam’s it takes to get to the top of the pole. He is 6’ tall. It takes about 4 Sam’s, so the pole is about 25’-30’ tall.
