Flagpole Flash Collar – Do I Need One?

We recently had a customer ask if they needed a flagpole flash collar. It’s an overlooked item some forget until after their flagpole is installed. If you installed your flagpole without a flash collar, and wonder if you need one, here’s some answers and tips for you.

Do I Need A Flash Collar?

Flash collars are typically included with flagpoles from Custom Flag Company. The significance of a flash collar is that it offers an aesthetic finish to your flagpole. It hides the foundation and sleeve below the flagpole, and offers a completed look to the job.

However, a common misconception is that the flash collar actually keeps moisture from getting into the sleeve. This simply isn’t true. Although the flash collar does offer some protection from the weather, it’s not a perfect seal. That’s why we reiterate that a flash collar is for looks, not for function.

So do you need a flash collar? Yes and no. If you would feel better having a flash collar to complete the aesthetic appeal of your flagpole, then yes the flash collar is your best option. However, they’re not a necessity.

I Forgot To Use The Flash Collar – Now What?

If you forgot to use a flash collar but still want one, there are a few options.

  1. Remove the flagpole: Depending on the size of your pole, you can remove the flagpole from the sleeve, and slide the flash collar on from the bottom. This is dependent on the size of your flagpole. If your flagpole is under 25 ft tall, then you will be able to lift the pole by hand with the help of another person. Anything over 25 ft, you will likely need our service team to remove the flagpole. We would use heavy machinery to remove, then slide the flash collar from the bottom.
  2. Remove the stationary/revolving trucks and adapter from the top of your flagpole: This allows you to slide the flash collar over the top of the flagpole, down to the base. This would require a tall ladder depending on the size of your flagpole. There would be much less physical labor involved compared to removing a flagpole.
  3. Get a split flash collar: This is the simplest way, rather than removing and reinstalling the flagpole, or climbing the flagpole. The collar is split in half with mounting screws on the bottom of the collar, to keep it together once on the pole.

Whichever method you use will get the job done. We encourage you to use a flash collar the first time, before you install it into the ground. This will save you time and money.
