Happy Chinese New Year - Year of the Pig

Today is the Chinese New Year and the year of the pig. The pig is the twelfth of the 12 year cycle of animals.

“In Chinese culture, pigs are the symbol of wealth. Their chubby faces and big ears are signs of fortune as well”

Chinese New Year Activities:

Midnight going into the New Year: Fireworks take place

New Years Day: Time is spent with family, younger relatives visit elders and married couples visit the husband’s family. The day is filled with food & wine.

Days 2 – 14: Rest of family is visited, it is important that the elderly and close relatives are visited on the first day. Everyone else is visited throughout the rest of the New Year.

Day 15: The final day of the Chinese New Year, lantern festivals take place with the first full moon of the new lunar year. This is the final day of celebrations.

Traditions are important and the time with family is especially special.
