This is a somewhat ceremonial practice that at a time when men stood shoulder to shoulder, marched into fire, while listening to their drum and bugle corps. As it has been clearly reported in western historical records, a man hit by fire, would pass on the colors, that they might not ever touch the deck, till the last man of honor had fell…This is not a myth.

Razor – to separate the colors from the flag to avoid desecration of the U.S. Flag. Match – to burn the flag, rope and any secret post intelligence. 45 Caliber Bullet (Ball)- if you have fought the enemy down to the last man, you should have also, fought down to no ammunition so, the last man should also be out of ammunition. All U.S. military service issue sidearms were 45 caliber. The single bullet is to keep from being taken prisoner by the enemy, when all manner of evasion has been exhausted.
