At Custom Flag Company, we don’t just sell flagpoles, we keep them flying strong for years to come. With decades of experience and one of the largest dedicated flagpole service departments in the region, we specialize in repairing and maintaining all types of flagpoles. One of the most common is internal halyard flagpoles with cable systems. Do you need any repairs on an internal halyard flagpole?

These sleek, secure systems offer a clean appearance and added protection against theft and vandalism. But like any mechanical system exposed to the elements, they require proper maintenance and, occasionally, expert repairs.

What Is an Internal Halyard Flagpole?

An internal halyard flagpole houses the hoisting mechanism inside the pole rather than on the outside. One of the internal systems uses stainless steel cable to raise and lower the flag. The cable runs through a pulley system (truck) at the top and is accessed through a lockable door or access panel near the base.

These systems are popular for their appearance and added security, especially in commercial, government, and school settings. However, when the cable frays, breaks, or gets stuck, you’ll need the right team to get things moving again. It can sometimes be costly.

Why Internal Halyard Repairs Require Specialized Expertise

Repairing an internal cable halyard flagpole isn’t your average DIY task. The winch that houses the cable can be complicated to repair or the repair might need to be done by accessing the top of the flagpole. This would require either a bucket truck or a steeplejack. While getting a bucket truck might be easy, knowing what you are repairing and how to do it can be complicated.

Here at Custom Flag Company, our service technicians are trained in:

  • Cable replacement and re-stringing
  • Winch and pulley system repairs
  • Door and locking mechanism fixes
  • Top truck (pulley assembly) replacements

We carry most parts for flagpole repairs, depending on the size of the flagpole. If a part needs to be ordered, it can typically be in our shop in a week. Our team has seen it all, from cables jammed by debris or bird nested winches, we will get your flagpole operation correctly again.

Don’t Let a Broken Cable Ground Your Flag

One of the most common service calls we receive is for snapped or frayed cables. When a cable breaks on an internal halyard system, your flag can’t be raised or lowered. Sometimes it even becomes stuck halfway up the pole.

In these cases, our team will respond quickly, arriving with the right tools, replacement cable, and get your flagpole back in working condition. We will call this a diagnostic visit, if we can fix the pole in this visit, we will. However, if we get onsite and there is more work that we are unable to do during that visit, we will send a quote for the work to be completed.

Preventative Maintenance: A Small Investment with Big Returns

Internal halyard systems, especially those with stainless steel cable, are highly durable. But without regular maintenance, even the best components will eventually wear down. We recommend annual inspections to:

  • Check for cable wear and tension
  • Inspect and lubricate winches
  • Tighten loose fittings
  • Ensure all parts are still in good condition
