What is an Internal Halyard Winch Flagpole?

As mentioned in a previous blog, how do you decide if you want an internal or external halyard flagpole? The external halyard has the rope on the outside of the flagpole, while the internal halyard has the rope or cable on the inside of the flagpole. So, what is an internal halyard winch flagpole? Below will answer all your questions.

What is a “winch” flagpole?

A winch based flagpole has a winch mounted inside the flagpole shaft which is only operable by using a crank handle. There is stainless steel cable that is wound in the winch, and when the flag is raised the cable unwinds from the winch. When the flag is getting lowered, the cable winds back up in the winch.

What parts do you need for an internal halyard winch flagpole?

Ornament

The most common ornament on top of a flagpole is a gold ball. This is the standard ornament a flagpole will come with. However, there are other options such as an eagle, or different colored ball ornaments.

Truck

The truck on a winch based flagpole is an enclosed system. There is a pulley at the top of the truck that the cable is fed through from the inside of the flagpole shaft to feed to the outside of the flagpole where the flags can attach.

Stainless Steel Cable

As mentioned above, the cable goes through the truck and feeds to the outside of the flagpole for the flags to attach to. It is important to know the exact height of your flagpole when replacing the cable. If you get too long or too short of a cable it will not work. Flagpole sizes are in increments of 5’ or 10’. So you might have a 20’, 25’, 30’, 35’, etc.

Flag Arranger

A flag arranger is needed for cable based flagpoles only. This is how the flag gets attached to the flagpole. The cable is the height of the flag, you will want to be sure you know what size flag you have before getting a cable arranger. You can have more than one cable arranger on one flagpole to fly two flags.

Weight

The weight is attached on the cable below the flags to keep the cable taught. And to help the flag come down the flagpole.

Retainer Ring

The retainer ring is used to keep the flag attached to the flagpole and they do fly freely. These are little balls on a cable that goes around the pole by the weight.

Winch

As mentioned above, the winch is the mechanism that moves the flag up and down, winding and unwinding the cable.

Crank Handle

This is the handle the you used to operate the winch. You insert the handle into the winch and turn it to either raise the flag or lower it.
