New Minnesota State Flag

In 2023 Minnesota was undergoing a new design for their flag. As mentioned in a previous blog about flags that have changed over the years, we were discussing the final three flag designs for Minnesota. However, none of those designs became the official new Minnesota flag. So, what is the new Minnesota state flag?

New Minnesota Flag

Historic Minnesota Flag

First, let’s talk about the flag from 1983-2024. This flag is the same design as the flag from 1957-1983, but the seal was redrawn and the blue was lightened. The Minnesota historic flag is much like the majority of state flags, the state seal on a blue background. It is difficult to see the difference between the other state flags with the state seal and blue background. Minnesota flag redesign was much needed. They now have a distinct design that is easy to differentiate from every other state.

Brand New Minnesota State Flag

The new Minnesota state flag was adopted on May 11, 2024. It consists of a dark blue field on the left side of the flag representing the night sky and the state’s shape. Inside the dark blue field is an eight-point star representing the north star. The light blue field represents the water in and surrounding the state.

Designing a State Flag

While more and more states, including Massachusetts, Maine, and Illinois, are redesigning their flags, it is important to remember the root of why it is necessary. Historically, when states were designing their flags 50-100 years ago, they didn’t have any guidelines to follow to make a well-designed flag. So, they just threw their state seal on a flag, usually blue in color. While the seal does represent the state, most seals are very similar and hard to see a difference, especially while flying on a flagpole.

Today, there are well-known guidelines to follow to create a well-designed flag. Specifically for state flags. It is important to consider symbols that represent important landmarks in that state. You can’t just put a random symbol on the flag, with no explanation, and it has nothing to do with anything in the state. Well-thought-out flag designs are going to have the best end result.

As a company and a native to the state of Colorado, we are proud of our flag, and want to show it off. Every state should be proud of their flag. Now, Minnesota can be proud of the well designed new state flag they fly.
